After the surprise success of Panda Plan, Jackie Chan and everyone’s favourite panda, Hu Hu, return for an even bigger adventure. This time the action leaves the city behind as Jackie and Hu Hu stumble across a mysterious hidden tribe deep within the mountains. Mistaken as part of an ancient prophecy, Jackie finds himself once again having to fight, dodge and improvise his way through danger while helping bring a divided community back together.
If you read our review of the first Panda Plan, you’ll know we described it as “pure Jackie Chan entertainment” and thankfully that spirit carries over into the sequel. Rather than simply repeating the same formula, Panda Plan 2 leans further into fantasy and family adventure, mixing martial arts, slapstick comedy and heartfelt themes of teamwork, friendship and family.
Jackie Chan remains the film’s greatest asset. It’s remarkable to watch a performer with over six decades in the industry still throwing himself into action scenes with infectious enthusiasm. No, this isn’t Police Story or Project A, but that’s never been the point. Jackie knows exactly what this film is aiming for, and he embraces every punchline, stunt and chase sequence with his trademark charm.
Hu Hu is once again irresistibly cute, and while the CGI won’t fool anyone, it hardly matters. The chemistry between Jackie and his furry co-star is what makes these films work, delivering plenty of laughs alongside some genuinely touching moments. The fantasy setting also gives director Derek Hui the chance to create colourful new locations and larger-than-life set pieces that younger audiences will absolutely love.
What perhaps surprised us most is the film’s warm heart. Beneath all the comedy and chaos is a story about bringing people together, encouraging compassion and reminding us that strength comes from working as a team rather than standing alone. Those positive messages help elevate the film beyond being just another family action-comedy.
The Well Go USA Blu-ray presents the film with a vibrant high-definition transfer that really allows the colourful production design to shine. Action scenes are clear and energetic, while the audio delivers the punches, crashes and comic mayhem exactly as you’d hope.
If you enjoyed the first Panda Plan (check out our review here) there’s every chance you’ll have just as much fun here. It’s bigger, sillier and even more fantastical, but it never loses the warmth and infectious energy that Jackie Chan brings to every frame. Long-time fans expecting vintage Hong Kong action may need to adjust their expectations, but families and those happy to go along for the ride will find another thoroughly entertaining adventure.
Panda Plan 2 is exactly what it sets out to be: light-hearted, funny, action-packed family entertainment led by one of cinema’s greatest icons. Jackie Chan may be in his seventies, but he still knows how to put a smile on your face.
