Review by Jamie M MacDonald

When a criminal escapes justice managing to slip through a loophole found by his defence lawyer, with so much ease, the defence lawyer manages to rip apart the police while questioning them. Disheartened and maybe getting too old for the job Police Officer Fok Chi-Ho (Donnie Yen) sets himself a new goal to balance the scales for justice. Spending seven years studying, he becomes a Prosecutor for the DOJ Department of Justice. With his newly appointed position Fok dives deep into this first case he is given by his boss Yeung (Francis Ng) spending time with seasoned lawyer Bao Ding (Kent Cheng) who has been assigned with Fok to show him the rights and wrongs of being a prosecutor. Fok takes on a supposedly simple drug trafficking case. The case should be straight forward, a poor man Ma Ka Kit (Mason Fung) has been charged with drug trafficking, with his defence advising him to plead guilty for a lesser sentence. Fok is not convinced that his defence are doing the right thing by their client, this prompts him to dig deeper into the case, and investigate all directly involved with this case.

Donnie Yen brings his style and flare to The Prosecutor, with the action design and his fast paced direction. The film flows very well between the action set pieces and the courtroom drama scenes blending the intricacies of the justice system trying to explain the so called loopholes that smart lawyers and criminals use to either get off or elude justice. Of course unfortunately, some poor people slip through these loopholes as well. Boasting a fantastic cast The Prosecutor`s acting is top notch from all. You cannot go wrong with the always impressive Francis Ng, his style of acting is effortless. Nice to see Kent Cheng as well, who is just always solid in whatever film he is in. Michael Hui (The Last Dance) plays the judge with precise charm and a little wry wit. I think the casting of these greats always helps Donnie up his acting game, it certainly helped in Chasing the Dragon with his cast next to the incredible Andy Lau. I feel now that Donnie is more than just an action star and should be applauded for his acting as well. As you`d expect from Yen`s action team the fight scenes are very well staged, executed and filmed. The first person scenes are so well done at the start immersing you into the scene; the fights throughout the film are Yen` usual excellence. The courtroom drama is perfectly executed as well, with obviously a lot of research going into making them as realistic as can be. For me I think both are well balanced making The Prosecutor one of my favourite films of 2025 so far.

I am like so many are, a massive fan of Donnie Yen`s, have been since first saw him in Drunken Tai Chi in the early 90s. He goes from strength to strength with all his action design and fight scenes. The Prosecutor has brought out the actor in him as well, and therefore for me is the best action actor!
