Review by Jamie M MacDonald

Amah`s love for her family is unconditional she has always put them first, whether they knew it or not despite their indifferences and lack of understanding to her ways. When Amah becomes terminally Ill her two sons and daughter spend more time arguing over who will visit, or which one of them will  stay with her in the hospital  while she undergoes her treatment, let alone who will  take care of her daily at her home.. M, agrees to take care his Grandmother Amah, moving himself into her home gaining access to her everyday life, but it is the inheritance he has in his mind, his motivation is his grandmother`s house and money. There is so much that M cannot remember from his past, his childhood with his Grandma, he is about discover some truths about his family and his Grandma, as well!

This film is owned by one person and one person only and that is Usha Saemkhum who plays Amah, the doting mother and grandmother, this is one of the most uplifting heart-warming and heart-breaking performances you are ever likely to see on film. A truly powerhouse of acting that is n=both rich in style and most of all honest. The camera never lies and she seems to know this, making her both engaging and a wonder to watch from the start to the finish. Not taking anything away from the other actors, they are also good and act their parts well, but it Usha that that makes this film a must see. The film is soaked in Thai tradition of family, death and inheritance. What makes us relate to this film and moves us is how it is told, the family bickering, the sibling rivalries, also money brings out the evil twisted side of people, and none at times can be quite so venomous or poisonous as family.

Written and Directed by Pat Boonnitipat he truly understands family dynamics and mixes both comedy in places and drama, so well. He has a clear understanding of the loneliness that grandma feels after her kids visit, how she has become a burden to them because of her illness, it is an amazing thing to watch, as you can see his direction all the way through the film. It plays out to the inevitable, beautiful and surprising ending with grace, charm and more importantly realism that we can all connect to.

Most definitely one of the finest pictures of 2024 for me…
